Common Types of Custody Schedules

Custody schedules define when each parent is responsible for day-to-day care and decision-making. While every family's situation is different, many custody arrangements follow a few common patterns. Below is an overview of widely used custody schedules and how they are typically structured.

Week On / Week Off

In a week-on, week-off schedule, the child spends one full week with one parent and then switches to the other parent the following week. Transitions usually happen on a consistent day and time, such as Friday evening or Sunday afternoon.

Weekends Only

In a weekends-only schedule, one parent has custody during the school week while the other parent has custody every weekend. Weekend time often runs from Friday evening through Sunday night or Monday morning.

2-2-3 Schedule

In a 2-2-3 schedule, the child spends two days with one parent, two days with the other parent, and then three days with the first parent. The pattern flips the following week so each parent has an equal share of weekdays and weekends over a two-week cycle.

3-4-4-3 Schedule

In a 3-4-4-3 schedule, one parent has custody for three days, the other has custody for four days, and then the pattern reverses the next week. This creates longer blocks than a 2-2-3 schedule while still alternating regularly.

Every Other Weekend

With an every-other-weekend schedule, one parent has primary custody during the week, and the other parent has custody on alternating weekends. Weekday responsibility remains consistent, while weekends rotate.

Custom or Irregular Schedules

Some families use schedules that don't follow a repeating weekly or biweekly pattern. These may be based on rotating work shifts, travel schedules, school calendars, or court-ordered arrangements that change throughout the year.

Using Care Number for Your Custody Schedule

Care Number works especially well with week-on/week-off and weekends-only custody schedules. Calls and texts to the shared Care Number can be automatically routed to the on-duty parent based on weekly or weekday/weekend responsibility, with customizable transition times.
